Art Skills Summer Workshops for Children
This summer we hosted Art Skills, a series of creative workshops for children aged 7-11 years.
The workshops are designed to offer children the opportunity to learn creative skills, explore art techniques and create their own artworks.
During the workshops the young artists visited our summer exhibition, Soft Power: lives told through textile art, exploring the artworks and sketching in the gallery. They also studied the work of RWA Academician Dr. Kurt Jackson, who creates large scale artworks exploring environmental issues.
The children learned about Dr Jackson, his distinctive painting style and the themes explored within his work. They also find out more about the role of RWA Academicians and how their practice connects to the RWA.
Alongside exploring each artist's practice attendees explored painting with acrylics, printmaking techniques, and created their own pop-up books, all guided by professional artist tutors that included Drawing School tutor Catherine Knight and Scribble & Sketch facilitators Victoria Willmott and Elena Hayward.
As part of the celebrations towards the end of the workshops children curated their own ‘mini exhibitions’, writing their own labels, sharing their work and discussing each other’s work.
In total 59 children took part in the Summer Art Skills workshops.
