Tuesdays, 6.30pm - 9pm | 5 weeks

Starts Tuesday 2 June 2026, on Zoom

In this online course, look specifically at certain Mexican art forms and artists, and using these as inspiration for an exploration of the self through drawing.

We will explore at two traditional art forms, the first being “papel picado” or cut out paper. Rather like a more complex version of snowflake cut outs, these consist of images created by the cutting of shapes in paper, traditionally made for the Day of the Dead festival.

Secondly we will look at Exvotos, the painting on tin plates of pictorial messages offering gratitude for what may be personal miraculous occurences.

Finally we will make drawings in response to world renowned Mexican artists such as Frida Kahlo and Remedio Varos whose work, rooted in the autobiographical, employed powerful symbolism, surreal spatial depiction and an exploration of the unconscious.

We will post some materials out in advance to those who have booked onto this course, but there may be a few inexpensive materials you need to provide for yourself - details to follow. Regrettably, if you live outside of the UK mainland, we are unable to post materials to you, so when booking please use this code to receive 10% off.
