Gillian Ayres, Mambo

Gillian Ayres (1930–2018)

Mambo

date unknown

oil on canvas

Gillian Ayres had an abstract style combined with the use of thick layers of paint. On top of this she used a wide range of bright colour, which work in harmony together. How do the colours in this painting make you feel? Ayres often named her artworks after they were made. How do you think this image reminded Ayres of a mambo, a Latin American dance? Perhaps the shapes work together as people do when they dance.
