The RWA is the only regional Royal Academy of Art in England. At our core are a group of artists and architects – Academicians – who are at the forefront of their profession. 

Membership to the RWA is open to artists and architects with a proven track record across any discipline or medium, including painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, architecture, photography, performance, installation, film and video. Applications to become an Academician are welcomed and assessed on an annual basis. Applications for 2027 are open between the 11th September 2026 and 28th February 2027. 

Candidates for membership go through a rigorous process of selection by a panel of Academicians. Shortlisted candidates are then invited to exhibit artworks at the time of the RWA Annual Open Exhibition. All existing Academicians vote to decide which of these candidates will be awarded membership of the Academy.
