Tutor - Catherine Beale SWA

1-day workshop

Monday 5 January 2026, 10.30 am - 4.30pm

Experiment with super-loose atmospheric watercolour and dramatic shots of colour as Catherine introduces you to her ‘gravity painted’ semi-abstract landscapes.

Start from your own landscape source photos and let them inspire you as you move beyond them by following the flow of paint. Watch Catherine’s demonstrations for the building blocks of loose watercolour. Merge real colours and create soft foliage forms and hazy light effects from watermarks.

The day concludes with a review to take home troubleshooting tips and compositional pointers from our paintings. All materials provided, although you will need to bring some photographs of landscapes as reference material, and we strongly recommend bringing 3 watercolour brushes with you if possible - 1 x large (one inch) and 1 x mid-sized flat, plus 1 x fine brush/rigger. You could also bring a camera, i-pad/notebook for taking any notes. Suitable for those with some previous watercolour painting experience.

Please bring an apron or wear clothes suitable for an art studio, and bring a bag suitable for taking your work home.

Catherine Beale is an award-winning painter from Bath. She is a member of the Society of Women Artists, exhibiting at the Mall Galleries and her portraits have been selected for the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour, Institute of Painters in Watercolours, RWA Autumn exhibition and Holburne Portrait Prize. Catherine writes for the Artist Magazine and is a registered SAA Tutor.
