Catherine Beale
Catherine is an award-winning painter who understands how to get radiant colour as well as subtle atmosphere from her watercolours. She brings thirty years of professional practice to her teaching - including solo landscape exhibitions, corporate works and portrait commissions. She has developed her own Innovative ‘gravity painting” techniques to combine the power of juicy, tubed paint with semi-abstract, mobile watercolour washes. She mixes on rigid surfaces (rather than in the palette), tilting them to encourage movement and ‘lifting off’ to adjust the work. She explains her inspiration and techniques in demos and workshops nationwide, in her book ‘Capturing light’, part of Search Press Limited’s Innovative Artists Series and in articles for the Leisure Painter & the Artist Magazine.
Catherine’s professional practice began in Singapore in the 1990s with a solo show at the British High Commission. Works for the US Embassy, British Club and others followed. The bright colour and light that imbues her work can be traced from this time. She now works from her hillside studio in Bath and is a Member of the Society Women Artists selling at their annual exhibition at London’s Mall Galleries. Her portraits have been chosen for the Royal Watercolour Society and Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, the Royal West of England Academy’s summer exhibition and the Holburne Portrait Prize and Bath Society of Artists Annual Exhibitions.
