Reflecting on Fiona Robinson's tenure as President of the Royal West of England Academy

Reflecting on Fiona Robinson's tenure as President of the Royal West of England Academy

The Royal West of England Academy has stood at the heart of Bristol’s cultural life for more than 180 years, shaped by generations of artists and leaders who have carried forward its spirit of creativity and ambition.

From the late 1990s when a new structure was brought in as RWA became a charity, there has been an incredibly strong ‘triangle’ of leadership. The Trust board, led by the Chair, works closely with the Academician Council, led by the President, and the Executive Team led by the Director.

The President’s role is limited to six years, and Fiona Robinson has held the role for six, very transformative years.  With a pandemic, capital project and change in Trustee and Executive leadership, Fiona has been a steady hand as the RWA has evolved and thrived under her leadership.

In the coming weeks, we will mark an important moment in our history as we thank Fiona Robinson for her remarkable service as the President of the Academicians, and warmly welcome Hamish Young as her successor.

It has been a real privilege to work alongside Fiona. I have hugely valued her wisdom and her unwavering commitment to excellence and inclusivity. Fiona has been a passionate advocate for the RWA and for the artists we represent. I have greatly enjoyed our partnership during her presidency; witnessing her kindness and care for staff, volunteers and artists, and have always enjoyed the sparkling humour which sneaks through. Fiona’s leadership has made the Academy a more open, welcoming and vibrant place, and her legacy will continue to shape the RWA for years to come.

We now look forward with excitement to working with Hamish Young, who will step into the role of the President of the Academy in October 2025. Hamish brings the same dedication to the RWA’s values and a clear vision for building on Fiona’s legacy, as well as a renewed commitment to ensuring the RWA is relevant and accessible to all. I know Hamish’s presidency will bring continuity, fresh energy and new opportunities as we shape the next chapter of the RWA's story, creating lifelong journeys with art for all communities.

The RWA has thrived for nearly two centuries thanks to the dedication of its artists, supporters and leaders. With deep gratitude to Fiona and great anticipation for Hamish’s leadership, we continue this journey together.
