Prize winners announced for 172 Annual Open Exhibition

The RWA Annual Open Exhibition is a celebration of the best in contemporary art and prizes are awarded in recognition of the individual feats of creativity, skill, ingenuity and commitment demonstrated by this year’s artists. 

This year, thanks to our generous sponsors and supporters, we have awarded prizes valued up to an impressive £10,000.

Eric Butcher, T/R. 1047 and T/R. 1059 Winner of The Academy Award, sponsored by the RWA and RWA Academicians. 

This prestigious award, with a prize of £3,000, celebrates an outstanding work in any medium that has captivated the selectors. Open exclusively to non-RWA Academicians. 

 

 

  


Carla Groppi, Homage Smith and Thomas on Under Milk Wood Winner of The Steele Art Prize, awarded by Tony Steele. 

This award, with a prize of £2,000, recognises a work that powerfully reflects contemporary society, capturing themes about people, place, and the world around us. 

 

 

 

 

  

Elizabeth Nast, Doorway of Hope – Winner of The Steele Art Prize, awarded by Tony Steele. 

This prize, valued at £2000, honours a work that thoughtfully reflects contemporary society, offering insight into people, place, and the events shaping our world. 

  

 

  

 

Elizabeth Brown, 18.09.24 – Winner of the Andrew Cole Emerging Artist Prize, awarded by The Andrew Cole Estate 

This award is a prize of £1000 awarded to an artist working within the first five years of their exhibiting career, who demonstrates excellence in their practice. 

 

 

 

Nigel Casseldine RWA, Self Portrait in fur cap – Winner of the The PJ Crook Prize for Narrative Figurative Painting, awarded by PJ Crook RWA 

This award, with a £1000 prize, celebrates outstanding figurative painting with a clear narrative.  

 

  

 

Ros Ford RWA, Porth Web Brickworks – Winner of The Drawing Prize, sponsored by Fiona Robinson PRWA. 

This prize, with a £300 cash award, honours excellence in drawing, recognising exceptional skill and creativity in this medium. 

 

 

 

Leo Davey, Hope – Winner of The Painting Prize, sponsored by Derek Balmer PPRWA. 

This award, which includes a £300 cash prize and a copy of Derek Balmer: A Singular Vision by Andrew Lambirth, celebrates outstanding achievement in painting. 

 

 

  

Stephanie Garratt, The Bedroom Nativity (or The Adoration of the Empty Nesting Doll) – Winner of The Floating Circle Prize, sponsored by  Friends of the RWA. 

This award included a £250 cash prize and and feature in the Friend's magazine Floating Circle celebrates outstanding work by an early career artist. 

 

 

 

 

Sitian Zeng, Blue in the Dream Winner of the Watercolour Award 1st Prize, sponsored by Consumer Intelligence 

This £250 cash prize celebrates a truly outstanding work in watercolour. 

 

  

Rob Windsor, Beach – Winner of Niche Print Makers Award, sponsored by Niche Frames. 

Highly commended – Howard Phipps RWA, Interior, Barnsley House.

This prize of £250 towards printing and framing, plus £250 cash is awarded to an outstanding work made in print.  

 

 

Zoe Williams, Morphosis (Series II) – Winner of Pangolin Sculpture Prize, sponsored by Pangolin Digital. 

This award, which is a 3D digital scan of work is awarded to an exceptional piece of sculpture.  

 

 

  

Ibby Lanfear, Traces, high tide (cuttlefish and porpoise) - Winner of Cass Art Award, sponsored by Cass Art 

This award of £150 Cass Art  gift voucher, a solo show in the Artspace plus a feature on the Cass Art Website celebrates an outstanding piece of artwork.
