Robert Jennison
Robert Jennison studied at the West of England College of Art, between 1950 and 1954 and later between 1957 and 1958. Until 1965 he taught in Secondary Schools in the Bristol area then gaining a post as a Lecturer at St Luke's College, Exeter and Exeter University where he remained until 1984. From this point he gave up full time lecturing to concentrate on painting.
He has shown his work extensively in the West Country as well as abroad. The Plymouth Arts Centre, Exeter University, the Bristol Guild, the Spacex Gallery Exeter, the Black Swan Gallery in Frome are key venues. He regularly exhibits at the RWA and the Royal Ulster Academy in Belfast. In 1997 he had a solo show at Il Tempo Ritrovato in Milan where he exhibited his landscapes of Devon. The catalogue to the show cites his interest in landscape:
'I see landscape as dynamic rather than fixed, commonplace perhaps, rather than picturesque, to be sensed and experienced rather than be looked at nostalgically. My paintings reflect the moods and atmosphere as well as the regional character of East Devon where I live and work.'
In describing his working methods he recently observed that: 'From initial drawings, daily and hourly contact and observation, memories and subconscious responses triggered by association, I work on a number of paintings at once; allowing cross-fertilisation, works in a series, possibly triptychs and diptychs, and on different scales large (4ft) and small (9")'
Robert Jennison's work is represented in numerous private and public collections in Britain, Canada, USA, South Africa, Australia Germany and Denmark. In 1997 The RWA celebrated his work with a solo show in the Stancomb Wills Gallery.
