Laurence Kell

Laurence grew up in Cornwall and studied at Falmouth School of Art and Design. His work reflects a strong connection to the visual world, with a particular interest in colour and compositional design

He currently paints a mix of familiar landmarks and hidden corners around Bristol, while also continuing his practice in still life and commissioned portraits.

Laurence welcomes visitors to his studio once a year as part of the BV Open Studios weekend, held annually in Bedminster, Bristol.

As a tutor, Laurence supports students in developing their skills through direct observation and steady practice. He believes that drawing is the foundation of all visual art, a tool that helps artists grow in confidence and find their own creative voice.

Laurence’s oil painting workshops reflect his enthusiasm for sharing practical techniques across portraiture and still life. With a focus on observation and composition, he offers encouraging guidance to help participants build their skills and develop their own visual language.

His work has been exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery, the Mall Galleries, and the Royal West of England Academy.
