Rachel James

Rachel James brings over three decades of experience to her role as a tutor in bookbinding and book restoration. Since qualifying at Brunel Technical College, Bristol, Rachel has earned both Diploma and Advanced Diploma credentials, as well as City and Guilds Certificates in bookbinding, restoration, and conservation—all with distinction.

A partner in Bristol Bound bookbinding since 1986, Rachel’s professional journey began with her own workshop in Clifton Village, later expanding alongside her husband Richard, whose expertise in boat-building and cabinet making complements their shared passion for traditional craftsmanship.

Rachel’s teaching career has been as varied as her restoration work. She has tutored graphic designers in bookbinding at Bath College of Higher Education and more recently supported photography students at Boomsatsuma, mentoring them in portfolio-making, photobook construction, and box making. Her love for teaching stems from the satisfaction of passing on practical skills and inspiring creativity in the next generation of artisans.

Her workshop has created unique pieces for renowned figures—including a birthday present for Sir David Attenborough commissioned by the BBC, projects for acclaimed photographer Martin Parr, and crafted film props for productions such as the 2025 Forsyte Saga. Rachel also regularly assists university students with dissertations for Bath and Bristol, demonstrating her dedication to both the craft and its community.

Rachel, alongside Richard, continues to offer a friendly, professional service, maintaining exceptional standards of workmanship. She delights in meeting people and discovering the stories behind their books, believing every project is itself a narrative waiting to be told.
