Elaine Cooper

Master papermaker Elaine Cooper is a leading expert in the creation, use and development of Washi- Japanese handmade paper. After graduating with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art in 1984, Elaine travelled to Japan to commence a 10-year apprenticeship in the art of traditional Japanese papermaking, evolving skills that integrate so harmoniously in her unique papers and contemporary artwork. She still maintains close links with Japan and actively promotes Washi on a national and international stage. In recognition of her work she was presented with The Ambassador’s Commendation award by the Embassy of Japan in 2002.

Her international exhibitions include both solo and large-scale collaborative events. Elaine’s teaching portfolio includes workshops at the British Museum, and many other institutions. She is an active member of Spike Print Studio, Bristol and The British Association of Paper Historians (BAPH).

Elaine’s classes guide students through the process of papermaking, its historical significance and contemporary applications. Techniques for developing form, texture, pattern and colour are explored using a blend of traditional and modern techniques, to help students build technical confidence while exploring their own creative potential.
