Bina Shah

Bina Shah is a British artist, born (1960) in Kenya, based in London. She studied Illustration at Harrow School of Art. She is a multidisciplinary visual artist, and her focus is on contemporary abstract art.

Bina’s is a multidisciplinary abstract artist. Her practice is site-responsive and deep rooted in both urban and rural environments echoing her emotional response to a place or situation. Her childhood memories of growing up in Kenya has evoked a passion of being connected with the land. Her central focus is on the human impact on a place and the traces left behind. Her process evolves organically as she experiments with mixed media and various techniques that lead to unexpected discoveries. Where possible she collects and uses natural earth pigments to capture the colours of the land to give a sense of place. She makes her own bamboo mark making tools and inks from Ayurvedic herbs. Although her work is predominantly monochromatic, she often adds wire, machine stitch to introduce line, texture and colour.

She exhibits regularly in London and Internationally and has received numerous awards:
Marcus Campbell Art Books prize – RE Small & Might
AP Fitzpatrick East London Printmaking - Highly Commended Prize
London Centre of Book Arts [LCBA] at East London Printmakers - Festival of Prints
Excellence in Printmaking Prize ELP at Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair
Shortlisted for Boodle Hatfield Printmaking Prize
New Entrants Prize - Broadway Arts Festival
Woolwich Contemporary Print Prize 2019 at National Original Print Exhibition, London

In 2023, her print was presented in a Box Set Edition by East London Printmakers as part of Victoria & Albert Museum’s Archive. Her work is in private collections around the world.
