Rebecca Barnard

From a figurative background, Rebecca’s work explores the connection between abstraction and figuration.  Marks are instinctive and intuitive, each piece having its own palette and story, evolving and forming over time.  References to the world around her can be pared down so as to be only glimpsed or sometimes obliterated completely, yet often retaining a narrative element.

Both the visual and psychological world provide motivation and inspiration to make marks.

“The compulsion to create is not something I can choose to turn on and off.  It is innate and constant.  It is what has sustained me through life and is the thing that allows me to express myself when words and deeds cannot.  Forming an idea, seeing light fall on an object – all manner of curiosities, is like hearing a siren call to recreate my world using paint and the materials around me. To me, that call is thrilling and when combined with the instinct to make; the whole is irresistible.”

Rebecca Barnard lives and works in Somerset and, alongside her own practice, also jointly runs the studio and gallery where she works, as well as teaches oil painting and cold wax technique as part of the educational programme within the space.
