Tutor - Andrew Taylor

2-day workshop

Thursday 12 and Friday 13 September, 10.30am - 4.30pm

Glass painting techniques have remained largely unchanged since the earliest known examples in Augsburg Cathedral, at around 1065. Painted glass appears primarily in church windows from the 12th century to the present day. Today, glass painting is also recognized as a modern art form, offering a satisfying and beautiful medium for artistic expression.

This course covers the practical aspects of glass painting in stained glass making. The vitreous paint, composed mainly of metal oxides and ground glass frit, is kiln-fired at about 640°C, becoming permanently fused to the glass, rather like a ceramic glaze.

Andrew Taylor is an ecclesiastical stained glass designer/maker and painter. Many examples of his original stained glass windows can be found in churches around the country, including commissions of national importance. As well as designing and making new windows, the studio’s work, also covers stained glass conservation.

All materials provided, although you will need to bring along a couple of fitch brushes, and if you have one, a badger hair brush. Please wear clothes and footwear suitable for a studio environment, and a box suitable for taking your work away at the end of the second day - you will be working on sheets of glass approximately A5 in size.
Some previous painting experience is helpful.
