Tutor - Richard Mossman

2-day workshop

Saturday 7 September, 10.30am - 4.30pm and Sunday 8 September 2024, 10.30am - 3.30pm

Working from a draped fabric, learn to construct the drapery in clay bas relief* sculpture. Modelling onto a board, learn to interpret the natural folds in the cloth and represent them in clay, thus enhancing understanding of how fabric and drapery interact with the subject onto which it is placed.

*Bas relief or "low relief" is a sculptural technique in which the design is only slightly raised above the flattened surface, it differs from high relief where the sculpture is much more elevated protruding out beyond the wall.

Please bring an apron or wear clothes and footwear suitable for a studio environment.
Students are welcome to take their clay sculpture home, but there is an extra cost of £50 for the clay and the board on which the artwork will be built, payable directly to the tutor at the end of the class.

Sculptures created in this class are not the type for firing. The clay will eventually dry and crack and fall apart, but kept damp and under plastic wrap it will stay workable indefinitely. Should students wish to preserve the artwork created in the class forever, a cast would need to be created. Depending on levels of interest, we are in the process of exploring the possibility of holding a class to teach casting.
