Artists Portfolio Reviews - Hamish Young VPRWA MRSS
Portfolio reviews are for practitioners at all levels working across all genres. This is an opportunity to meet with Hamish Young RWA for 30 minutes and discuss any aspect of your portfolio from individual works to developing broader ideas, portfolio presentation and talking about your work.
You are welcome to present your work in a printed format, digitally (e.g. Website), or a combination of the two. If showing work digitally, you will need to bring your own laptop. Portfolio reviews can be booked online. Please note that there is limited availability. If this page is sold out please email artists@rwa.org.uk to register your interest for future events
Attendance at portfolio reviews will be in-person at the RWA. Please book in at the front desk when you arrive. Each session lasts 30 minutes.
Structure of the Meeting:
- Introduction (5 minutes):
- Briefly introduce the Academician and reviewee.
- Discuss the goals of the meeting.
- Outline the agenda.
Portfolio Presentation (10 minutes):
- The artist presents their portfolio.
- Each piece is shown with a brief explanation of the concept, medium, and techniques used.
Feedback Session (5 minutes):
- Before feedback the Academician may ask questions and seek clarification on aspects of the portfolio of work
- The Academician provides feedback on one piece or more broader body of work.
- Discuss strengths and areas for improvement.
- Ask questions and/or offer suggestions on techniques, composition, idea development and presentation
- Feedback may follow the structure “I like… I notice…. I wonder”
Q&A and Discussion (5 minutes):
- The artist can ask questions or seek clarification on the feedback.
- Discuss broader career advice or specific challenges the artist is facing.
Next Steps and Action Plan (5 minutes):
- Summarise key points from the feedback.
- Suggest actionable steps for the artist to take.
- Set a timeline.
How the Artist Should Prepare:
Organise the Portfolio:
- Select a cohesive set of works that best represent their skills and style.
- Arrange the pieces in a logical order, possibly thematically or chronologically.
Prepare Explanations:
- Be ready to discuss the intention, inspiration, and process behind each piece.
- Think about any specific areas where feedback is needed.
Research the Academician:
- Familiarise themselves with the Academician’s work and background.
- Prepare thoughtful questions related to the Academician’s expertise and experience.
Set Goals:
- Define what they hope to achieve from the session.
- Think about long-term career goals and how the feedback can help achieve them.
Be Open:
- Approach the session with an open mind, ready to receive constructive feedback.
