Having good quality photographs of your artwork can help greatly with things like entering exhibitions, funding applications, publication in print or presenting an online portfolio. This workshop is aimed at artists who would like to produce good quality and accurate images of their work for purposes such as these. It is a practical workshop in which you will learn the essentials of lighting and camera settings needed to do this, and take photographs of your own artwork, whether 2D or 3D. You will be working in small groups for this and act as ‘photographic assistants’ for each other as well as photographing your own work. We will use available light and cheap, readily obtainable accessories rather than expensive specialised equipment. We will also have a brief look at cropping and resizing the photographs for various uses.

If you would like to be added to a waiting list for this class, please email sarah.craig@rwa.org.uk

Before booking we ask everyone please read our Safety Precautions that are linked here and our updated Terms and Conditions below.

You will need to bring a camera; you don’t need any particular kind, but phones have limited settings available and are not readily fixed to a tripod, so wouldn’t be suitable. Martin is has a couple of cameras that could be borrowed if you can supply a memory card - but it is essential that you contact us at drawingschool@rwa.org.uk or call 0117 906 7606, if you would like to do this.

Tripods to share will be provided, but do bring your own if you have one.

You should bring a spare battery (or a newly charged one if you don’t have a spare), and a printed or electronic manual if possible, as the menu settings do vary between brands and models.

Most importantly, bring a couple of pieces of your own artwork to photograph, 2D or 3D.

Ideally these will be fairly small and readily portable, a maquette would be fine if a finished piece would be too bulky or heavy - the principles are the same.

If your work is framed, it is important to remove any glazing prior to bringing it; photographing glazed work requires more specialised equipment and lighting.
