Table in a Window
date unknown
oil on canvas
purchased at the 110th Royal West of England Academy Annual Exhibition, 1962
The dark green curtains act as protection from the harsh bright light coming from the window. The deep olive green of the curtains contrasts with the radiant window on both sides drawing your attention to the table. As the sunshine hits the blue jar and the vast plate on the table, it casts a fine shadow and the brightness of the sun makes you think about summer and warmth.
The mark-making of the painting is very soft with the brush sweeping around. The table legs are very unusual as they are connected.
