Frances Gynn RWA Presents - Public Erasure, Turtle Dove
07 December 2024
Saturday 7 December, 11am
Artist Frances Gynn RWA and guest speaker, former Chair of the RSPB and Devon Birds Kevin Cox, invite you to take part in 'Public Erasure' . Take an eraser and rub out a species.
What is 'Public Erasure' ?
‘Public Erasures’ is the term Frances Gynn uses to describe her detailed drawings of endangered species which she invites the public to erase, This active erasure of painstaking drawing serves as a potent metaphor for the adverse effects of human activity on all species and ecosystems, offering both a visceral and intellectual experience, encouraging debate and positive personal and public action
Why the Turtle Dove?
The Turtle Dove (Streptopelia turtur) is currently listed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List, the European Turtle Dove is the UK’s fastest declining bird species and threatened with global extinction. In the UK the European Turtle Dove feeds on wildflower seeds and farmed crop grains. Their decrease in numbers is mostly due to the lack of available weed seeds in the countryside, with a dietary switch to cereal grains being associated with an alarming reduction in nesting attempts. Being shot at on migration and hunting may constitute a significant factor driving population declines as well. Turtle doves have featured in art and culture for thousands of years and have long been symbols of love.
