Varosha Cornford

People and their stories fascinate me and so my work focuses mainly on portraiture, which I generally paint in oil on canvas. I am self-taught and work in my studio at home. I enrich my practice with regular life drawing, occasional short courses and by visiting as many exhibitions as I can. Self-portraits are also a regular feature of my work.

I’m currently working on a project called Bristol Faces, with sculptor, and RWA drawing school tutor, Sophie Howard. In this ongoing series we aim to portray a vast array of Bristol residents in order to capture something of the spirit and character of the city. We’ve had two exhibitions of this work already, in June 2019 at the Vestibules, College Green and in September 2019 at Hours, Colston Yard. The next edition of Bristol Faces will be at the Create Centre in September 2020

I’m also working towards a solo show at Centrespace Gallery in Autumn 2020 – this is a personal project, which has evolved from my fascination with the art and culture of Mexico.
