Howard Phipps

Howard Phipps studied Fine Art at the Gloucestershire College of Art in Cheltenham, from 1971 to 1975, followed by a post-graduate year at Brighton Polytechnic.

Howard Phipps has been a member of the Royal West of England Academy since 1979, and The Society of Wood Engravers since 1985. The artist has also been a frequent exhibitor at Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions, where in addition he was a winner of the Christie’s Contemporary Print Award in 1985. In both 2003 and 2004 he received the landscape print prize at ‘Originals’ - The National Print Exhibition in London, then the engraving prize at the same exhibition in 2010. In 2008 he was awarded The Society of Wood Engravers Rachel Reckitt Prize, at their Bankside Gallery exhibition in London. The artist has had numerous solo exhibitions, including three shows at The Dorset County Museum, and two at The Victoria Art Gallery in Bath.

Howard has work in the permanent collections of The Cheltenham Art Gallery, Museums in Salisbury and Exeter, The Dorset County Museum, the Russell Cotes Museum, and The Hunt Institute, USA. In 2009 The British Museum acquired twelve of his engravings for its collection.

The artist has illustrated a number of books for publishers such as Bloomsbury, Century, The Folio Society, Fleece Press and The Whittington Press with whom he has had the closest collaboration. They published his most ambitious book to date: Ebble Valley 2007, with over thirty wood engravings and four linocuts, and a text by the artist.
