RWA welcomes new Royal member

We are highly honoured to announce that HRH The Prince of Wales has graciously accepted the RWA Council’s invitation to become an Honorary Academician.
HRH, himself an accomplished watercolourist, follows in the artistic footsteps of Edward VIII who, when he was the Prince of Wales, accepted the same title in 1921. A copy of Edward’s handwritten letter of acceptance to our then President Dame Janet-Stancomb Wills was sent to HRH’s office in London as a warm reminder of the pleasure it gave his forebear to become an Honorary RWA.
HRH The Prince of Wales has exhibited at the RWA for 12 years in the annual Autumn Exhibition displaying his famous landscape watercolours and will do again this year for the 156th annual exhibition (26 October - 14 December). This year is the 150th anniversary of the RWA at its current site which seemed a fitting year to welcome HRH The Prince of Wales into the Academy officially as an honorary
member.
Derek Balmer, President of the RWA, said,

commitment to us. This honour is of particular significance bearing in mind that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is the Academy’s patron.”
