Thomas Coates is known for his drawings, oils and pastels. He is a member of numerous societies including the New English Art Club, the Royal Society of British Artists and is also an honorary member of the French Pastel Society.

He has exhibited widely including shows in several key venues and on has been a frequent exhibitor at the Arlesford Gallery in Hampshire.
