What? – Size Matters
Three linked international exhibitions exploring ideas of scale.
When? – 14th August to 10th September 2005
10 – 5.30 Mon to Sat; 2 – 5 Sun.
Where? – Royal West of England Academy of Arts (RWA),
Queen’s Road, Clifton, Bristol BS8 1PX
Tel: 0117 973 5129

The three exhibitions, which make up
SIZE MATTERS, “What is Big?”, “Hand to Mouse” and the “5th British International Miniature Print exhibition” are exhibitions of international art on paper. The exhibitions push at the extremities of scale – with sizes ranging from postage stamp to
billiard table.

Included in
“What is Big?” and exhibiting their artwork for the first time in Britain, Moscow duo Natalia Lamanova and Alexander Kholopov present ‘The Best Sewerage for the Best People’ – manhole cover designs from around the world!

Exhibition curator and exhibiting artist
Peter Ford has transformed metal fragments from the gutters and garage forecourts of Bristol in his three-metre-wide ‘Street Language – Things Fall Apart’, a checkerboard of 128 linked pieces of the artist’s own recycled paper, coloured by the red earth of Bristol.

If this city based imagery tires your eyes you can escape into the blue depths of Korean artist
Youngna Ahn’s massive watercolour, or explore the cool interior spaces in Canadian artist Marlene MacCallum’s photogravure etchings and books.

One of the artworks included in
“What is Big?” is so large it cannot be displayed in its entirety. From Tokyo, Toshio Fujita presents a nightmare narrative of his city’s metro system using the traditional scroll format, at eleven meters in length a fraction of the work will be displayed at the Bristol based gallery.

Also featuring as part of
SIZE MATTERS are two further exhibitions: HAND TO MOUSE – which
includes images created in the digital laboratory at the University of the West of England – and
THE 5th BRITISH INTERNATIONAL MINIATURE PRINT EXHIBITION, which includes over 200 original small-scale print works using various techniques including mezzotint and wood engraving.

The three exhibitions combined present over
350 recent works of art on paper from thirty countries. SIZE MATTERS is suitable for all age groups and most of the items are for sale, many of which are exceptionally affordable with prices starting from as little as £30. This interestingly international exhibition runs for four weeks from the 14th August until the 10th September.
