Laura Howarth completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in art and art education at Fairhaven College and Western Washington State University in the USA. She later completed a postgraduate course in multimedia studies at Bristol Polytechnic.
Laura works in a variety of different media including oil paint, printmaking, collage and relief work in paper. She is particularly interested in surface, whether decorative, marked by weather and natural processes or created by the application of different materials and techniques, and takes inspiration mainly from landscape and organic forms. The transient nature of sky and ground as light and shadow shift and alter subtly and sometimes dramatically has become a central theme for Laura in her landscape paintings.
Experimentation with a wide variety of approaches and materials has allowed her to exploit the element of chance and accident in her work and she likes to let the process influence the way the work evolves. Surfaces are gradually built up and then scraped away or covered by other layers often revealing unplanned and unexpected results.
Currently a member of Spike Print in Bristol, Laura has exhibited in a number of galleries in Bristol, Bath and Lincoln and has work in private collections in the UK and the USA. Her work has been exhibited in the RWA Annual Open Exhibitions for the last two years.
