In 1933 Robert Ball won a scholarship to the Birmingham Central School of Arts and Crafts and remained a student there until July 1940. Whilst there he won every prize and scholarship in 1937, aged 19.

In January of 1941 he commenced his scholarship in the engraving school at the Royal College of Art. During his one year studentship he won every prize and scholarship and was awarded an Associateship of the Royal College of Art..

In 1943 he was elected an associate to the Royal Society of Painters, Etchers and Engravers. That same year he was also awarded an Associateship of the Royal British Society of Artists. Between 1942 and 1952 Ball taught drawing painting and anatomy at Birmingham College of Art. He later went on to become Principal of Stroud School of Art, a post he held for over six years. Between 1954 and 1981 he held the post of Senior Lecturer in Drawing and Painting at Gloucestershire College of Art.

In England his work is included in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Ashmolean, Oxford and has been shown in the civic galleries of Cheltenham, Gloucester and Hereford.

In 1976 Robert Ball was elected an Associate of the Royal Society of British Artists and in 1988 became an Associate of the RWA.
