Peter Coate is a landscape painter who is drawn to the more remote locations in the British Isles. He has painted almost continually in the Mendips, Wales, Derbyshire and Cornwall. His native Somerset provides further source material in the form of its historic churches. In 1999 Peter Coate took part in the Cill Rialaig Project supported by the Irish Government. This one month invitation provided the opportunity to work on the Irish Atlantic Coast. Influenced by English landscape painters such as John and Paul Nash, Thomas Hennell, John Piper and Graham Sutherland, Peter Coate's interests have been in the non-human natural world. In his own words: 'Birds, plants, rocks, wild places and the effect of the weather on old buildings, churches, farms ruins and trees' are the raw material of his paintings' Peter Coate has shown annually at the RWA since 1965 and regularly at several English regional galleries including solo exhibitions at the Patricia Wells Gallery, Thornbury in 1979 and the Rural Life Museum in Glastonbury in 1997. He started the Mendip Painting Centre in 1972 which he ran for twelve years. This important facility attracted large numbers of students and also provided exhibition facilities.
