RWA Open Painting Exhibition
24th April - 4th June 2005
The Open Painting is an exhibition dedicated solely to the medium of painting. Its aim is to embrace a broad range of styles and mediums. It is an incredibly colourful and vibrant display of the best of contemporary painting. Painters from all over the country have been encouraged to submit their artworks for selection by some of the UK’s leading experts in the art world and it has attracted interest internationally. The exhibition opens to the public on Sunday 24th April at the Royal West of England Academy, in Bristol.

The second RWA Open Painting exhibition will be opened by the renowned abstract painter
Professor John Hoyland RA at 2:30 pm Saturday 23rd April. The first Open Painting exhibition was opened in 2001 by the late Sir Terry Frost.

The selection committee included the art critic
Andrew Lambirth (Spectatormagazine), Nicholas Usherwood (arts writer and editor Galleries magazine), artist Maurice Cockrill RA RWA, Camilla Nock RWA and Anita Taylor RWA, and established art dealer Anthony Hepworth.

Derek Balmer, President of the RWA who chaired the selection committee said 'The aim of the Open Painting exhibition is to attract, through prize money and our prestigious reputation, a wide and specialised submission that will hopefully reflect the best in contemporary painting. There is no telling what the vision of an open exhibition might be, but this exhibition has fulfilled my hopes. It is an eclectic, controversial, honest, pleasurable exhibition of a high standard “

The first prize of £8000 supported by the Odin Charitable trust was selected by Andrew Lambirth, Nicholas Usherwood and Anthony Hepworth and was awarded to Michael Porter RWA for “Forest Floor”. The work chosen for purchase forthe RWA collection is by Shahid Parvez for “Kite Flying Rajasthan.” The LarkTrust Award of £1000 for the Promotion of Figurative Painting goes to Michael Taylor for “Portrait with Grave Goods”. The RWA Friends association and Mary Fedden RA PPRWA will also be awarding cash prizes and theUniversity of West of England will be offering a place on one of its fiveday drawing schools “Drawing Quarters”. The winners of these prizes will be awarded at the Private View on Saturday 23rd April.
