A day trip to see Southampton City Art Gallery and a stunning National Trust Property.

The collection at Southampton City Art Gallery tells the story of western art from the Renaissance to the present. Most significant is the gallery’s collection of 20th-Century British art, starting with post impressionism and including surrealism and the St Ives-based abstract artists. Entry to the main gallery is free.

We will then go on to the National Trust’s Mottisfont Abbey near Romsey - a romantic house and gallery, originally founded as an Augustinian priory in 1201, set in beautiful riverside gardens. The house has a substantial permanent collection of 20th century art and an upstairs gallery which houses special exhibitions. At the time of our visit there will be an exhibition Heath Robinson: Dreams and Machines containing over 60 works covering the extraordinary breadth of Robinson’s work, from quirky machinery to dream-like watercolour landscapes. Entry to Mottisfont is free for National Trust and Art Fund members. For non-members the admittance charge is £10.
