Artwork of the Month: June-July13 Jun 18
June's Artwork of the Month has been chosen by Nicola Bealing RWA.
Nicola Bealing (born 1963) is a Cornwall-based British artist who works in both painting and printmaking. Bealing’s work is said to be unique for its imaginative nature, and reporters have called Bealing’s creativity as “enjoying absurdity and herd-like behavior.”
She was educated in England and Malaysia and participated in the Foundation Course at Herts College of Art and Design in 1983. She then studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art in London from 1984-1987.
Since her first solo exhibition at Christie’s Education in London in 1991, Bealing’s work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions throughout England, Denmark, and Luxembourg. In the last few years, Bealing has had numerous solo exhibitions at Cadogan Contemporary in London, Beaux Arts in Bath, Campden Gallery in Chipping, Campden, and the Cath Alexandrine Danneskiold-Samsoe Gallery in Copenhagen.
Her work can be seen in the Ritz Carlton in Chicago, Deutsche Bank (London), Jerwood Contemporary Collection (Hastings), the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health, and in a number of other diverse buildings. Bealing’s work is also housed in a number of important private collections.
The Cornwall Artists Index describes Bealing’s “wit and skill … [as employing] the unexpected and unusual in her figurative and abstract work.”
Her works are highly imaginative and address psychological concerns. Even when painting aquatic, Cornish scenes that are “bold and painterly in their handling, the abstracting qualities of light and colour are not the override preoccupations of her work.”
