RWA Open Painting Exhibition
Until 9th May 2010
Open Painting 2010: Muse wins ‘best painting’
prize
Art imitates life in the latest RWA exhibition, as a woman who features
in a painting by guest artist Saied Dai,
won the Open Painting joint first prize for her own work.
Charlotte
Sorapure, the artist who posed for Dai’s £16,000
painting, ‘Artist in Studio’, won
joint first Odin Prize for her own submitted painting, ‘Tower’,
so being both artist and muse in the same exhibition.
Painters from across the country submitted their work for selection
to the Open Painting exhibition, and three top artists - Saied
Dai RP, David Rayson head of painting
at the Royal College of Art, and Eileen Cooper
RA acclaimed painter and printmaker - were invited to exhibit
work alongside the open submissions.
Among the other winners, Bristol-based Andrew Price
won the Odin second prize for his piece ‘Cherry
Blossoms, Tokyo’, a painting of the Japanese city’s
railway system. At the prize-giving Simon Quadrat,
RWA President, asked to what the title referred. Andrew explained:
“It was named after a row of trees in the background. The title
was inspired by the Japanese love of detail.”
Other prize winners included Rebecca Cains,
who won joint first prize for ‘Hall’s
Salvage Yard’ and Louise Balaam
who won third prize for ‘White Cloud, Autumn
Land’, courtesy of the Odin Charitable Trust. Michael
Harvey won the Artists’ Magazine Figurative prize for
‘Breaking Down the Door to the Jews House After
Ucello’ and Paul Brown won
the Creative Picture Framing Award for ‘Resonator’.

Sixteen pieces are from Bristol-based
painters, with Weston, Portishead and Hotwells providing inspiration.
Others are of places further a field such as war scene ‘Tea
for Two in Grozny’ (by Neville Weston)
and ‘Louvre Museum’ (by Philip
Nicol).
The spring Open Painting, where artists are invited to submit work
for potential inclusion in the exhibition, attracts high quality art
from all over the country as well as the RWA’s home, Bristol.
High quality through the medium of paint is the only common theme,
with work ranging from pastoral to figurative, abstract to still life.
The RWA academicians’ recently elected President and Open Exhibition
co-ordinator, Simon Quadrat - who is exhibiting
two pieces - explains: “The exhibition demonstrates the act
of total engagement between painter and canvas in the widest variety
of different styles and techniques. I congratulate all the artists
who got into the exhibition.”
All original paintings are for sale, with prices ranging from £85
to £16,000, ranging in size from tiny to large scale. Prints
of many of the works are also available. The RWA participates in the
Art Council’s Own Art loan scheme where up to £2,000 can
be borrowed interest-free to buy art.
Prizes for the best work (excluding invited artists) chosen by the
selection committee are donated from The Odin Charitable Trust, totalling
£8,000 for four prizes, The Artists Magazine and Creative Picture
Framing.
