Michael Porter studied Vocational Graphic Design at Nottingham College of Art between 1963 and 1966. From 1967 to 1972 he studied at Chelsea College of Art obtaining a 1st Class Dip AD in Painting followed by a Post-graduate degree. From 1972 to 1973 he became a Fellow in Fine Art at Gloucester College of Art in Cheltenham. He currently is a Research Fellow at Falmouth College of Art and teaches at Wimbledon School of Art. He has taught on several Post-graduate courses and has worked as a Visiting Lecturer in thirteen institutions.

He has been the recipient of numerous awards in recent years including an Arts Council of Great Britain Minor Award in 1976, The Lorne Award, London University in 1999 and an Honorary Doctorate in Professional Practice at the University of Derby.

Michael Porter has exhibited extensively since 1976 in both group and solo exhibitions. He has had several solo shows at the Purdy/Hicks Gallery in London and in 2001 showed at the Tate Gallery, St Ives. His work has been included in exhibitions in France, Belgium, Poland Spain, Germany, Norway and Ireland. Many notable collections contain examples of his work such as The Arts Council, The British Council, Deutsche Bank, Unilever, the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Whitworth Gallery, Manchester amongst numerous others.

The main influence on his work is 'landscape in its widest sense' whether it is from people who work on the land, or music or literature that uses the land as subject matter. Traditional and contemporary artists who engage with this subject are also influential on him.
