Through the Lens : 1st RWA Open Photography Exhibition
8 June - 20 July
The summer will see an exciting new venture filling the elegant galleries of the Royal West of England Academy in Bristol. For the first time in its 150-year history, photographs will dominate the space. More than 300 items selected from open submission of over 2500 images will be displayed alongside a group of works by five invited artists: Richard Long RA RWA, Keith Arnatt, Richard Billingham, Chang-soo Kim from Seoul, South Korea and Philippa Lawrence. Another special feature will be a display of platinum prints from 31 Studio, Stroud.
Although international in scope, the response from the photographers of Bristol to this open exhibition has been outstanding. Over 260 artists from the local region submitted more than 1300 photographs showing that Bristol really is a city of burgeoning creativity.
The work on display will be wide-ranging; some controversial and provocative and others more traditionally beautiful and serene. There will truly be something for everyone and with the large majority of work for sale this exhibition is the perfect opportunity to buy that special piece of contemporary art.
All exhibitors within the open selection will have the chance to win one of the sponsored prizes. Prize sponsors include Flowers East Gallery, Printmaking Today, Gallery2C in Bristol, The Darkroom UK Ltd, London Camera Exchange, Spike Print Studio, John Purcell Paper, Friends of the RWA and a £1000 purchase prize from the RWA. Visitors will also have the opportunity to win a free photography course in the Cotswolds sponsored by Andalucian Adventures.
Maxine Relton RWA, a member of the Exhibition Co-ordinating group, said:
