Fancy letting off steam after a hectic day at work or college? Tired of the treadmill, the rowing machine and the exercise bike? Come and de-stress at RWA’s new Creative Gym classes, where each week you will be guided through a range of fun, informal and unusual art-making activities by a diverse range of experienced tutors. Absolute beginners welcome!

January 13: Drawing Me Drawing You Drawing Me, with Anouk Mercier – Fun, informal and collaborative portrait drawing exercises designed to loosen the hand!

February 3: Drawing Inspiration: experimental hand and machine-made collaborative drawing workshop with Debbie Locke RWA and Sara Dudmam

February 24: Paper, scissors, paint! with Ros Cuthbert RWA. Create a face from collage and paint

Artist Professional Development Sessions

This new series of CPD sessions aims to offer support and advice to both emerging and more established visual artists, in a number of areas, from funding your creative practice to writing about yours and others’ artworks. The sessions will combine talks, presentations and discussion and will also be a great way to meet fellow creative practitioners.

January 13: Writing and talking about artworks, with Phil Owen, writer, musician and Research Assistant at Arnolfini, Bristol

January 20: Commercial galleries and public commissions, with Claire Sharpe, Freelance Visual Arts Producer. Identifying new opportunities for producing and exhibiting your work

January 27: Marketing your work, with Artist-Lecturer Julie McCalden, artist and freelance arts professional

February 3: Setting up your own space, with Artist-Curator Lucie Ackerman

February 10: Working Creatively with Young People, with Emily Bull. Interim Programme Director, Creative Youth Network

February 24: Funding your work, with Artist-Lecturer Julie McCalden, artist and freelance arts professional

March 3: Practice-led Research PhDs, with Artist-Lecturer Katie Davies

Creative Writing

With Holly Corfield Carr and guest writers Rachael Boast, Tania Hershman and Rowan Lear

Taking place in the main gallery itself and rooted in the RWA spring exhibition, Arboretum, this course will encourage your writing to branch out into new and rewarding directions. The sessions will lead participants on an adventurous trek through the great forests of literature and visual art, exploring everything from myth to moss through poetry, fiction and art writing. These friendly and accessible sessions will be led by poet and writer Holly Corfield Carr alongside a stellar line up of guest tutors, including artist and writer Rowan Lear, award-winning short fiction writer Tania Hershman and the internationally-acclaimed poet Rachael Boast. Prepared to get lost in the woods as these writers take you from start to final edit and back home again. No previous writing experience is necessary.
