Suzie Crisfield

Suzie Crisfield is an emerging talent in the textile design world and is a pioneer of unusual and unique constructed fabrics.

Since graduating in 2008 with a first class honours degree from Chelsea College of Art and Design, Suzie has been busy designing high-end products for a variety of different sectors such as commercial fashion, interior design, and bespoke jewellery and accessories. Suzie has also been developing an innovative silicone-based material she created whilst at university. Such is the success of this fabric that Nathan Jenden commissioned a dress for his Spring/Summer 2009 collection for display on the catwalk at London Fashion Week.

Suzie’s main interests lie in transforming existing materials into highly modern and sophisticated fabrics that can be applied to endless mediums. She is a keen proponent of contemporary production techniques, and draws inspiration from the numerous ways in which the composition of textiles can change when these are used. Suzie does a lot of work with laminated plastics, PVC, rubber and synthetics, and experiments with various processes, taking into account light movement, refraction, reflection and colour enhancement. Her work captures these elements and translates them into useable fabrics with interesting patterns and textures.

Her material has numerous qualities which lend itself to a multitude of ideas: it is hard-wearing and long-lasting; it can be used for playful and sophisticated designs; it is UV-active; each design is unique; and every design can be turned into a digital print which can subsequently be used on more conventional fabrics. All of her jewellery is hand constructed using sterling silver, silicone and antique crystal.

'In all my work I try to scrape away the everyday and mundane and attempt to reach the essence of what it means to me to be human.

Deeper truths lay beneath the humdrum in our lives. Often intangible or only felt intuitively and more easily expressed by me through form, colour and shape.
Truth that is long lasting and fundamental to who we are. Expressions of love, freedom, pain and everything that makes us human.

It is only in expressing these things that I feel truly alive.'
