Chalker studied at Goldsmiths College, London between 1936 and 1939 and
went on to the Royal College of Art after the war attending the painting
school. His early influences during training were Walter Sickert, Ruskin
Spear and Stanley Spencer both of whom he knew personally. |

| His
war years and Japanese prisoner of war experiences created a body of work
which have formed a permanent exhibition in TheWar Exhibition Hall, Thailand,
opened in October 1999. The same year works were exhibited at the Peace
Museum Kyoto. His work has been featured on film and television during the
1990's and he has exhibited as far a field as Australia. |

| Whilst
confining his painting mediums to oils he uses gouache and pen for the medical
and surgical illustrations that he is also known for. His membership of
The Medical Artists Association of Great Britain and consultancy for Birmingham
University form a contrast to his career as an artist. He has lectured at
Bristol University and also recently at the London Arts Club. |
