James Beale studied in Gloucestershire and at Chelsea School of Art between 1968 and 1973. He went on to be a Fellow in Painting at Cheltenham. Until 2006 he was a senior lecturer and head of the Printmaking Department at the University of Gloucestershire. He took early retirement in 2006 to concentrate on his own work.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter/Printmakers and was elected as an RWA Academician in 2005. He has served on the Selection and Hanging Committee and is currently a member of the Council.

    

He exhibits regularly in the U.K, Europe, Japan and the U.S.A. His work is in public and private collections in the U.K and abroad.
    The landscape has always been a starting point for my imagery. I would describe my work as a response to the landscape,
    which allows me to develop ideas from figuration through to abstraction
