Stuart Jennings studied at the West of England College of Art and went on to teach art. The last fourteen years of his teaching career was as Head of Art at Cricklade College, Andover.

He was a regular exhibitor at the RWA and also in London, York, Harrogate, Gloucester, Brussels and in Ahrenshoop, Germany.

Of the processes from which his paintings derive, the artist himself wrote in 2001:
'My paintings 'take off' from my drawings. These drawings are almost always done for their own sakes and not directly with a painting in mind.
The pleasure I derive from drawing in the countryside is one I treasure. A drawing might be 'dormant' for years or provide the start for a painting
immediately. A painting will bear little resemblance to its drawing except for a few simple and basic shapes but despite this it is vital to the
process of painting….… The landscape of the British Isles is also of supreme importance to me.'
Stuart Jennings cited artists whose work is characterised by a firm sense of order, compositional integrity and structure as influential on his work such as Piero della Francesca, Poussin, Cezanne and Braque. Turner is also included.

An active contributor to the life of the RWA, Stuart Jennings passed away on November 8th 2007.
