Kenneth Carter was born in Yorkshire. Until 1970 he ran the sculpture department of Exeter College of Art and taught at Hull and Nunneaton School of Art. He received an Honorary Doctorate whilst Director of Arts at Plymouth University.

He won prestigous public commissions which included new life-size sculptures for the 15 niches of the Chapter House at Exeter Cathedral. He has six large carvings as part of the gardens of Frederick Gibberd's. He was a winner of the Leeds Gold Medal for Sculpture and a Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors. His portraiture work earned him a wide audience beyond the UK and his wonderfully iconographic bust of the late John Lennon is recognised throughout the world.

Kenneth Carter's work has been shown extensively at numerous venues which include the Alresford Gallery, the Stable Gallery, London, the Swan Gallery, Burford the Royal Academy, London and the RWA.

Among notable early influences were Jacob Epstein and Henry Moore, while later in his career, English and Flemish tomb sculpture became significant in the development of his work.

Kenneth has exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, The Royal West of England Academy, The Society of Portrait Sculptors and The Contemporary Art Fairs in Bath and Islington, London among many others.

Kenneth Carter passed away in Febraury 2007.
