Paul Brason trained at the Hastings School of Art then went on to study at Camberwell College of Art, London. In his early career Paul began exhibiting as a designer and scenic artist for the Haymarket Theatre in Leicester, and for Richmond Theatre Productions and the Ballet Rambert in London.

In 1978 - 1980 he began to exhibit at The National Portrait Gallery in 'A New Look at British Portraiture' and began accepting commissions for portraits. He continued exhibiting at The National Portrait Gallery until 1994, receiving a special Commendation in 1983. The Royal Academy has selected his work regularly since 1988. The triptych of Lord Morris was exhibited at The National Portrait Gallery 'Portrait Award 1992' and was purchased by The Museums and Galleries Commission for the Government Art Collection. Other commissioned works include HRH Prince Michael of Kent for the RAC Club and Sir Michael Tippett for the Royal Collection, Windsor Castle.

In 1998 he won the Ondaatje Prize for Portraiture and was elected President of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in 2000. He lives and paints near Bath.
