The RWA Annual Open Exhibition - the largest of its kind in the region - is a unique showcase of well-known and undiscovered artistic talent.
In previous years, this open submission exhibition has included painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, film, sculpture and illustration, and has recieved entries from artists across the UK and beyond.
In 2016, the Annual Open Exhibition reached its 164th year and received over 2300 works by over 1000 artists. The exhibition selection panel included artist and critic William Packer, internationally renowned photographic artist Susan Derges and gallerist Danielle Arnaud, alongside RWA Academicians John Eaves, Stewart Geddes, Stephen Jacobson, Mark Prescott and Laurie Steen.
As Bristol’s first art gallery and the UK’s only regional Royal Academy of Art, the Annual Open reflects the RWA’s ongoing commitment to championing world-class art in the region and creating opportunities for new and emerging talent.
All work in the exhibition is for sale. Proceeds from the Annual Open play a significant role in supporting the RWA - a charity (1070163) that receives no regular funding from the government or crown.
In 2016, prizes included the Annual Open Exhibition Prize of £1,000 sponsored by Smith & Williamson; a Solo Exhibition at David Simon Contemporary in Bath sponsored by David Simon Contemporary; an £800 People's Choice Award sponsored by the Affordable Art Fair and The Painting Prize £250 sponsored by Derek Balmer PPRWA.
