Though Fine Art was central to all that was done it was not exclusively so. Landscape was marginalised in those days except in an English Romantic illustrator’s style such as Nash and Sutherland amongst others. The Art examinations were biased towards figure subjects and training was split into Fine Art, Crafts and Commercial Design. Turning to landscape was a deliberate choice after 1972. After fifteen years of non-figurative work it had become a cage rather than a direction or Philosophy. This painting subject is primarily the central point of the design, the ‘spotlit’ view through the gate. Much of this is a sort of set of variations on squarish rectangles - voids and solids. The framework of trees and grass verge is less focussed. Painted from sketchbook notes it is really a sketch in directness. back |
