His inspirations are the cinema, photography, art and literature of the period. This image of a mundane part of Covent Garden market before its relocation to Battersea was probably the first in a series of urban landscapes which became increasingly less place-specific. These paintings attempt to portray a sense of a lost world, “the past as another place”, without too much sentiment. The artist writes:
