Covent Garden
This painting derives from the artist’s long-held interest in post-war Britain; in particular, its urban, working class and industrial life. His inspirations are the cinema, photography, art and literature of the period. This image of a mundane part of Covent Garden market before its relocation to Battersea was probably the first in a series of urban landscapes which became increasingly less place-specific. These paintings attempt to portray a sense of a lost world, “the past as another place”, without too much sentiment.

The artist writes:
For me, painting is always a hard, often unsuccessful struggle to get the final image out. I am happy to leave the scars of the battle present in the paint surface rather than cover them over”.
