Figures on a Beach
The majority of my work is made at least partly in front of the subject and rarely concentrates on figure. So this painting is not typical, having been painted entirely in the studio from figure drawings I made on the beach in Falmouth, Cornwall.

These drawings, together with those of footballers in hoods and bathers at Brockwell Lido, became the subject of a series of paintings I made around the same time.

I love the variety of people on the beach. Everyone crowded around the shoreline, facing out to the empty sea as if watching some vast stage for the action to begin.

It is a much portrayed subject, but I could not resist those bright bits of activity set against the big strips of sand, sea and air. I enjoyed moving the figures around like a collage, attempting to make something I could be satisfied with as a painting from all that life.
