Approaching Rain (Northumbrian Coast)

My paintings represent responses to sound and silences within the landscape around me, reflecting
its movement and rhythms - advancing rain, glancing sunlight, swelling and breaking waves, spray
merging with air - those elements within the environment that might be described as ‘intangible’.

Approaching Rain is part of a series painted whilst sitting on rocks close to the edge of the sea in Northumbria. Kerr’s painting embodies responses to the elemental, expressing a sense of constant movement within the landscape. Made on-site, these small oil paintings on board, together with charcoal drawings, often become the basis for larger work on canvas painted later in the studio.

Kerr is not somebody who makes meticulous studies of landscape – her paintings are beyond mere topography. Delighting in sudden and unpredictable changes in the weather, she is very much a painter of British landscape - a foul-weather painter who relishes being out in, and working from the landscape when it’s wet, dark and moody. With a nod towards the Romantic tradition in landscape painting, her practice remains nevertheless contemporary and experimental.
