A seriously hot, dusty place. After a spell of trying to paint while camping and suffering from the lack of shade and the heat and dust, we ended up renting this modern apartment on the edge of a village - this painting resulted from looking down from the balcony back onto that hot, dry, barren land. The vehicle is typical of those used by the local peasants/subsistence farmers; the woman wears the traditional black clothing in the heat. I’ve always been interested in the peasant culture and traditions in the south of Europe (since I was a kid). Looking at these two aspects of Greek life from a modern building above seemed to make them more noticeable and paintable; demanding a response. Apart from them, the painting is empty; a bit of fence but mainly just heat and dust of summer. back |
