He then took a Post Graduate Diploma in Fine Art/Sculpture at Bristol Polytechnic between 1969 and 1970. After teaching in schools and colleges he became Principal Lecturer in Sculpture, Director of Studies, in the Fine Art Department of Bristol Polytechnic, now University of the West of England. John Hussey cites numerous influences on his work:
statuesque stillness and controlled movements of bodies of guardsmen. My early sculptures reflect a classical symmetry possibly influenced by this. In the late 1960's I was appalled by the Vietnam War and the ravages of the Biafran War in Nigeria and my work then was a commentary on this. This was in cast aluminium and bronze. Influences at ths time, apart from the material were Picasso, Joan Miro, Gonzalez, David Smith and later Anthony Caro…In 1978 I acquired a holiday cottage on the edge of the Essex saltmarsh and was heavily influenced by the decaying; but at the same time preservative effects of the sea, sand, mud and wind upon timber, iron, paint, canvas and rope…I began working on assemblages combining the qualities of abraded, silvery wood and rope with unblemished steel and brass…I still work in welded steel and I still feel the need to comment on situations such as the decommissioning of arms in Northern Ireland.' back |
