Bird Shrine
This painting is one in a series of
‘Relics’ paintings which employ mixed media, and frequently incorporate objects found on location, selected for their intrinsic worth and the associations they hold for the artist. These collected objects, either actual or in represented form, as in Bird Shrine, present an analogy with archaeology and buried meaning, carrying with them memories from a previous existence, even as they become part of something new.

These works relate to working beaches around the coast, once busy and suffused with tradition and folklore derived from winning a living from the sea. Most have suffered a fate similar to the Scottish clearances, and are now places where objects and memory endure in a landscape of ghosts.

Each work in the
‘Relics’ series is a direct response to particular locations and they exist today, but they also resonate with ethereal and evocative echoes from an ancestral world.
