This is an example of the kind of direct study, probably painted in one sitting and hardly touched again, that derived from a study of Sickert and an art school training firmly rooted in drawing and direct observation.

The dark-toned ground helped to establish tones accurately from the start; half tones with a rub, light areas with solid touches. One built up towards the lightest touches.

Whatever else I was experimenting with at the time I always seemed to have a few direct firgure studies like this going. I wish iI could do this now.

My model was one of my art students: one of the last models I ever had, and a good painter too!
